Soap Making Project

UNICEF reports that in many low-income areas, only 60% of residents have access to basic handwashing facilities with soap and water. Namasanda village is no exception. At Namasanda Primary School, a proactive team of students and their science teacher, supported by the TERJA foundation, are working diligently to change these challenging circumstances.

Emphasizing the importance of proper hand hygiene as a vital method to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, the TERJA foundation has spearheaded a pilot project where students learn to produce soap using locally sourced materials. This initiative not only promotes regular handwashing but also aims to significantly reduce the transmission of waterborne and respiratory infections, as well as other preventable ailments. The soap produced is utilized for a variety of sanitary purposes within the school, including cleaning latrines, washing dishes, and ensuring cleanliness before meals and after using the bathroom. This effort is expected to elevate hygiene standards and help reduce the prevalence of illnesses related to poor sanitation.
